Sponge Blasting Services
Sponge blasting is a low dust dry abrasive blasting technology used for cleaning, corrosion mitigation, and surface preparation prior to applying new paints and coatings. This innovative blasting method produces up to 98% less hazardous dust compared to traditional sandblasting and is much more environmentally friendly with up to 95% of the sponge blasting media recycled for reuse.
McCahill Painting is a Sponge-Jet® Equipped Contractor providing sponge blasting services to industrial and commercial customers in the Chicago metro area and greater region.
Sponge-Jet® is a registered Trademark of Sponge-Jet, Inc. in the US and other countries.
What is sponge blasting and how does it work?
Sponge blasting is an innovative, low-dust dry abrasive blasting method used in surface preparation to remove contaminants and achieve an ideal surface profile for new coatings.
Sponge blasting media is powerfully propelled onto a surface, where it flattens on impact, exposing abrasives and abrading the surface. The sponge media then expands to create a vacuum that entraps nearly all the blasting dust and contaminants, resulting in up to 98% less airborne hazardous dust.
Blasted sponge media is collected and cleaned as part of the process, and up to 95% of the sponge media is recycled for reuse.
McCahill Painting has invested in Sponge-Jet® equipment and technology to bring our customers this advanced and uniquely beneficial blasting capability.
What are the benefits of sponge blasting?
Advantages of our Sponge-Jet® Blasting services include:
- Fast and effective – quickly renders surfaces to optimum condition for paint and coating adhesion
- Works on all substrates
- Can be calibrated to achieve any profile
- Safer – allows near perfect operator visibility and reduces potential for injury from rebound and ricochet of abrasive media
- Protects sensitive environments, equipment, and other assets
- Reduces clean up time and disposal costs
- Environmentally responsible – releases less pollutants and fugitive emissions; allows for up to 95% of sponge media to be recycled and reused
- OSHA-recognized for low toxicity
Where can sponge blasting be used?
Sponge blasting can be used as a substitute for sandblasting or other blasting methods in most situations and is especially well-suited to environments where the area needs to be kept as dust free as possible. This can include:
- Indoor/active worksites – by minimizing dust, sponge blasting protects property, personnel and visitors from dust exposure and the inhalation and visibility risks associated with traditional blasting
- Worksites near sensitive materials and equipment – minimizing dust protects sensitive equipment, products, and materials
- Busy outdoor areas – while dust is often less of a safety concern outdoors, sponge blasting is a great fit for densely populated or highly active outdoor areas where people and property/equipment are nearby; sponge blasting is also a more environmentally friendly choice for outdoor blasting
There is no such thing as 100% dust-free blasting
Some contractors claim to deliver "completely dust free" blasting, but 100% dust-free blasting is a myth. Even so, the impressive dust suppression (up to 98%!) achieved by using sponge blasting and vapor blasting is extremely advantageous. Sponge blasting and vapor blasting minimize prep and clean up, reduce health and safety hazards, and protect the environment and your space exponentially over traditional blasting methods such as sandblasting or soda blasting.
