What is vapor blasting and how does it work?
Vapor blasting is a low dust wet abrasive blasting method that uses pressurized water to powerfully blast abrasive media against a surface to remove failing paint, corrosion, dirt, chemical residue, and biological and environmental contamination.
Using water in the blasting process reduces airborne dust by 92% or more, making vapor blasting especially useful on projects where minimizing dust is a priority.
Vapor blasting is also used to create a surface profile, or texture, that helps new paint adhere effectively for a strong and durable finish.
Vapor blasting is sometimes referred to as wet blasting, slurry blasting, vapor honing, dustless blasting, dust-free blasting, or wet sandblasting.
How does vapor blasting reduce dust?
Water is the magic ingredient here! By incorporating water into the abrasive blasting process, dust is suppressed by at least 92% compared to sandblasting and other dry blasting methods.
During the vapor blasting process, the combination of water and abrasive media (sometimes called a slurry) captures and weighs down the vast majority of the lifted debris so it does not become airborne as dust.
There is no such thing as 100% dust-free blasting
While today’s advanced vapor blasting methods and related techniques offer great advantages by suppressing the vast majority of dust while blasting, 100% dust-free blasting is a myth.
Even so, the dust suppression achieved by using vapor blasting, and methods like Sponge-Jet® Blasting, is still extremely advantageous and can minimize prep and clean up, reduce health and safety hazards, and protect the environment and your space exponentially over traditional dry blasting methods such as sandblasting or soda blasting.

Where can vapor blasting be used?
While vapor blasting can be used as a substitute for sandblasting or other dry abrasive blasting methods in most situations, vapor blasting is particularly well suited for:
- Indoor/crowded worksites – by minimizing dust, vapor blasting protects nearby property while also protecting personnel and visitors from dust inhalation and visibility risks associated with traditional blasting; vapor blasting creates less mess which is especially ideal in tight and busy work environments
- Worksites near sensitive materials and equipment – minimizing dust protects sensitive equipment, products, and materials near the worksite and allows for safe and efficient blasting with less masking
- Industrial environments and settings where flammable gases may be present – with far less dust created, vapor blasting greatly reduces the explosive potential of dust compared to dry abrasive blasting
- Outdoor urban or high-density areas – in addition to protecting people and property, vapor blasting does not require the extensive containment measures necessary when dry blasting to keep dust within legal safety limits
- Delicate surfaces – a lower PSI may be used when vapor blasting to protect surfaces like soft metals and wood, as well as surfaces with intricate details you want to preserve
Is vapor blasting better than sandblasting?
Both methods are highly effective at cleaning and preparing surfaces. What’s most important is to determine which blasting method is best suited to your particular project and needs. If you need to minimize dust or are working with delicate materials, vapor blasting (or another low dust blasting method like Sponge-Jet® blasting) would be a great option.
